Running For Fitness

Runners begin running for a lot of different reasons. Overall runners continue the sport because of the level of fitness they achieve. It is relatively inexpensive to begin running. One can proceed at their own pace until they get to the desired level of fitness and then maintain from there. Most authorities suggest a very slow start continuing with a slow build up over about eight weeks to reach the two mile mark. Once you reach that goal increase weekly goals by about 10 percent to avoid injury.

Running is a wonderful way to get in shape and stay that way. It helps circulation and overall heart health. It also aids the immune system which helps the runner avoid prolonged illness. Muscles burn more calories than fat so the muscles that the runner develops serves much more than just providing a toned look. Running improves one’s health in many ways including protecting against unwanted weight gain.

Many people start with a walk/run program. Gradually they increase the distance run each week as the walking distances are decreased. This avoids injury and allows the body to gently slide into a fitness mode.

The most important expense for runners is running shoes. There are several brands available such as Adidas, asics or Nike running shoes. Depending on the type of running desired, other shoes, clothing and gear may be purchased. For instance, if one does marathons a solid running shoe is preferable. Whereas if trail running is the goal a good trail running shoe will give better traction on the trails.

There are many races for which one can sign up. A personal goal may be to find a 5K in the area that is about 6 to 8 weeks away and begin to train towards it. There’s nothing like an upcoming race for motivation to stay fit.
