Weight Training For Runners
Running has many health benefits. However, a runner cannot run every day. It will burn them out and make the runner much more likely to get injured and ditch their running shoes. Cross training is very important for runners. A very good choice for cross training is weights. Weight training can be very beneficial for runners.
Building up arms and legs through weight training will help in the runner’s overall strength. Stronger, more firm leg muscles will also help the runner increase running speeds. This is a great tool for the runner who chooses to race. It makes setting personal records more attainable.
It is also very important for the runner to build their core through weight training. Working the abdomen and pelvic areas strengthens the core of the runner’s body. Not only does this help with unwanted weight loss, a strong core helps with running stamina. The muscles work for the runner instead of fatty tissue working against them.
A runner who is cross training by lifting weights will find many benefits. Of course there is the obvious weight loss and muscle tone in the developed runner’s body. Muscle also burns more calories than fatty tissue even while resting or sitting still. Running speeds up the metabolism which helps to strengthen the heart, lungs and immune system; while weight training benefits the muscles individually. They both keep the entire body healthy and at an overall optimum. Weight training and running are complementary for each other in the runner’s body. While running speeds the metabolism up and aids in fighting disease and obesity; weight training strengthens individual muscle groups and the body core.
Weight training just two times a week can give the runner much increased stamina and speed. Runners need to work on all major muscle groups to attain the best level of fitness.
