Winter Running Shoes
Winter running gives runners a whole new meaning to the word “challenge.” Not only do they have to keep up their mileage and endurance, but now, they must also face cold weather, biting wind, snow, slush, and icy surfaces. Many runners opt to switch to indoor workouts during this somewhat unbearable season, but a lot of runners choose to continue to run outdoors.
Warm but breathable gear is essential for winter running, especially items that will protect ears and fingers from the cold. It is important to have a good pair of running shoes as well if you want to run safely on the snow and ice. While any pair of running shoes will work if you’re careful, you can choose specially designed winter running shoes to help you on those slippery, snowy surfaces.
Winter running shoes are designed to withstand more inclement weather. Shoes built with special grips on the soles of the feet will help give you the traction you need to run safely.
Although many shoes are not labeled specifically as winter running shoes, you want to look for shoes designed for rough terrain or trail running, as these have the sturdiest construction and strongest grip.
Because you may end up trampling through snow while running in the winter, you also want to find running shoes that will keep your feet warm and dry. Again, shoes designed for long-distance treks, trail running, and rock-climbing are typically warmer than regular running shoes.
Beside the special winter conveniences, you obviously want to check for regular shoe qualities as well. Make sure the running shoes are sturdy and offer good support.
Check the arch and ensure that the shoes fit your feet properly. If you have a specially designed winter running shoe that doesn’t fit or is cheaply made, you are not going to get the benefits you need.
It takes a little bit more focus to run safely during the wintertime, especially since many of us live in a snowy climate accustomed to frequent snow storms, icy sidewalks, and slush.
However, it is not impossible to keep up an out-door running routine in the winter, especially if you watch your step and run properly over the ice.
Having winter running shoes keeps your feet dry and more firmly planted when you go over the slippery spots, so you can be sure to return home safely and without any broken bones.
